Bhairon Temple — at Bhairon Ghati, about 1.5 km beyond the Bhawan and at about 6,619 ft — is the highest point most pilgrims reach on the Yatra.
The tradition
Getting there
| Option | What to expect |
|---|---|
| On foot | A steep climb of about 1.5 km from the Bhawan, about 1,400 ft higher. The path has steps, lighting, rain shelters and toilets. |
| Ropeway | The Bhawan–Bhairon passenger ropeway (opened in 2018) covers the climb in a few minutes. Book tickets through the official portal or at the counter; operating hours are set by the Shrine Board. |
| Pony | Ponies are available on the path from the Bhawan. Use only registered pony operators. |
Facilities
Since 1986 the Shrine Board has widened and lit the track, rebuilt the steps, and added rain shelters, water supply and toilets. A refreshment unit near the temple sells beverages and packaged snacks.
Tips
- It is colder up here. Bhairon Ghati can drop below freezing on winter nights; carry a warm layer even in summer.
- Senior citizens and those with heart or breathing conditions should consider the ropeway rather than the stairs.
- From Bhairon Ghati the path continues down towards Sanjichhat, so you can return without retracing your steps to the Bhawan.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the easiest route from Katra to the Bhawan?
For walkers, Tarakote Marg (Banganga area to Adhkuwari) followed by the alternate track via Himkoti is the gentlest. Both are free of ponies, and battery cars run on the alternate track. See Katra to Bhawan.
Are ponies allowed on all tracks?
No. Ponies use the traditional (old) track. The alternate track via Himkoti does not allow ponies.
How do I hire a pony or palki safely?
Hire only registered operators. Check that their ID card is valid for the current year, pay no more than the fixed rates displayed on sign boards and at assistance centres, and keep their card until you reach your destination. See Ponies, palkis & pithus.
