Facilities on the Yatra Route

What Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board provides from Katra to the Bhawan — shelters, food, water, toilets, cloak rooms, blankets, accommodation, banks and medical help.

Since taking over in 1986, the Shrine Board has built a long chain of facilities along the route. Most are run on a no-profit basis.

Food and refreshments

  • Bhojanalayas: the Shrine Board runs Bhojanalayas at Adhkuwari, Sanjichhat and the Bhawan (where they run round the clock), serving simple vegetarian meals at low prices.
  • Refreshment units / view points: a dozen units along the old and alternate tracks sell tea, coffee, water, biscuits and snacks. Many are at scenic view points with seating.
  • Private stalls also line the route. Never pay more than the printed retail price on packaged goods.

Shelter, water and sanitation

  • Shelter sheds (Vishram Sthals) protect pilgrims from sun, rain, snow and falling stones. On parts of the alternate track and from Sanjichhat to the Bhawan they cover almost the entire track; elsewhere they are spaced about every 500 m.
  • Drinking water points and water coolers along the track.
  • Toilet blocks along the route and at the Bhawan.
  • Lighting along the whole track for night travel.

Rest and accommodation

  • Free halls at Adhkuwari, Sanjichhat and the Bhawan, first come, first served, for rest or an overnight stay.
  • Rented rooms and dormitories run by the Shrine Board at Adhkuwari, Sanjichhat and the Bhawan, as well as in Katra and Jammu. Book on the official portal. See Dharamshalas & Shrine Board stay.

Blankets and cloak rooms

  • Blanket stores issue blankets free for the night against a refundable security deposit. Keep your receipt.
  • Free cloak rooms at all Shrine Board guest houses in Katra and at the Bhawan, where you can leave shoes, belts, combs and other items not allowed in the Holy Cave. Do not leave cash, jewellery or valuables in deposited luggage.

Medical help

Medical units at Banganga, Adhkuwari, Sanjichhat and the Bhawan provide first aid, oxygen and emergency drugs. Sanjichhat has a hospital and the Bhawan has an ICU. See Medical facilities.

Banks and communication

Banks and ATMs operate in Katra, and bank branches have operated at Adhkuwari and the Bhawan. Mobile networks work along most of the route, though coverage can be patchy in places.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the Vaishno Devi trek take?

It varies with fitness, crowds and the route. Many walking pilgrims allow most of a day for the round trip, plus time in the darshan queue, which can be long at peak times. Plan for a full day and night.

Is darshan open at night?

Yes. According to the Shrine Board, darshan is open round the clock throughout the year. It pauses for about two hours during the morning and evening aarti.

What should I wear for the Yatra?

Comfortable flat-soled shoes with good grip, and layers. Even in summer the Bhawan is cool at night, and in winter heavy woollens are needed. Carry rain protection in the monsoon. See What to carry.

Can I carry my mobile phone?

Phones, cameras, belts, combs, shoes and other items not allowed in the Holy Cave must be deposited at the free cloak rooms at the Bhawan before darshan. Rules on electronic items along the track can change, so follow the instructions of security staff.

Is food available on the way?

Yes. The Shrine Board runs Bhojanalayas at Adhkuwari, Sanjichhat and the Bhawan (round the clock at the Bhawan) and refreshment units along both tracks. Food on the route is vegetarian.

Do I need to visit Bhairon Temple?

It is optional, but many devotees believe the Yatra is complete only after visiting Bhairon Temple, about 1.5 km above the Bhawan. A passenger ropeway connects the Bhawan and Bhairon Ghati.

Can I stay overnight at the Bhawan?

Yes. The Shrine Board offers rented rooms and dormitories (book on the official portal) and free rest halls on a first-come, first-served basis, with free blankets against a refundable deposit.
