Amar Mahal Palace Museum

A red sandstone palace above the Tawi, once the residence of Raja Amar Singh, now a museum of Pahari paintings and royal heritage.

Amar Mahal is a red sandstone palace with views of the Shivaliks to the north and the Tawi river below. It was once the residence of Raja Amar Singh and is now a museum run by the Hari-Tara Charitable Trust.

Highlights include:

  • A golden throne said to contain about 120 kg of gold
  • Pahari paintings, including the Nal Damayanti series
  • Portraits of the rulers of Jammu & Kashmir
  • A library of around 25,000 books

Taxis and auto-rickshaws reach the palace from anywhere in Jammu.
