Thousands of senior citizens complete the Yatra every year. These options make it much easier.
Plan the route
- Avoid the busiest days — weekends in May–June, the Navratras and late December — so you spend less time standing in queues. See Best time to visit.
- Consult your doctor before you travel, especially with heart, lung, blood pressure, diabetes or joint conditions.
- Stay in Katra the night before close to the registration counter, so you can rest and start fresh. See hotels near the bus stand.
Ways up that reduce walking
| Option | How it helps | Booking |
|---|---|---|
| Helicopter Katra → Sanjichhat | Skips most of the climb; about 2.5 km of mostly level or gently sloping path remains to the Bhawan | Official online portal only |
| Battery car Adhkuwari → Bhawan | Covers the alternate track; provided for the infirm, sick and differently-abled | Official portal, subject to availability |
| Palki (palanquin) | Carried by registered bearers from Katra/Banganga | Hire at the start of the track at fixed rates |
| Pony | Ridden on the old track | Hire at the start of the track at fixed rates |
| Bhawan–Bhairon ropeway | Avoids the steep 1.5 km climb to Bhairon Temple | Official portal or counter |
Rest and comfort
- Free rest halls at Adhkuwari, Sanjichhat and the Bhawan, and free blankets against a refundable deposit.
- Shelters and benches at regular intervals along the track.
- Keep warm clothing handy: night temperatures at the Bhawan can drop below freezing in winter.
- Carry regular medicines, a small torch, a walking stick and light snacks.
Health precautions
- Avoid the stairs, which the Shrine Board specifically advises against for heart patients.
- Medical aid is available at Banganga, Adhkuwari, Sanjichhat (hospital) and the Bhawan (ICU).
- The descent is hard on the knees; consider a pony, palki or battery car for the way down too.
