Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board has issued guidelines that it describes as binding on all pilgrims. Violations can lead to cancellation of Yatra permission and action under law. The points below summarise them; read the full text on the official website (opens in a new tab).
Do
- Register at the designated counters and carry your RFID card.
- Follow official announcements from the Shrine Board's website, helplines and verified social media (X: @OfficialSMVDSB), and the public address system on the track.
- Plan around weather: if the India Meteorological Department or the district administration issues heavy rain, cloudburst or landslide alerts, reschedule or postpone.
- Travel light and wear footwear with good grip and rain protection.
- Carry only essentials: water, light snacks, prescribed medicines, valid ID and your Yatra card.
- Consult a doctor first if you are elderly, travelling with children, or have a medical condition.
- Stay on designated tracks. Shortcuts and unmarked trails are prohibited.
- Report emergencies or unusual activity to the nearest Shrine Board official, medical staff or security personnel.
- Cooperate with Shrine Board staff, police and rescue teams during halts and diversions.
- Rest and stay hydrated at designated shelters.
Don't
- Don't start the Yatra in adverse weather.
- Don't carry heavy, oversized or unauthorised luggage on the trek.
- Don't stop, rest or gather near landslide-prone areas, drains or disturbed slopes.
- Don't ignore signage or safety instructions.
- Don't rely on unverified social media forwards. Use official channels only.
- Don't trek alone, especially at night or in low visibility.
- Don't crowd around shelters or barriers, or block emergency routes.
- Don't carry prohibited or hazardous items, such as flammable substances or sharp objects.
Practical etiquette
- Hire only registered ponies, palkis and pithus, check their ID cards, and don't pay more than the displayed rates. See Ponies, palkis & pithus.
- Keep the track clean. Use dustbins and toilets.
- On the old track, give way to ponies and stay on the side away from the edge.
- In the darshan queue, keep moving and follow staff instructions. Photography is not allowed in the cave.
- Beware of touts offering "quick darshan", unofficial helicopter tickets or paid registration. Book Shrine Board services only through the official portal.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the Vaishno Devi trek take?
It varies with fitness, crowds and the route. Many walking pilgrims allow most of a day for the round trip, plus time in the darshan queue, which can be long at peak times. Plan for a full day and night.
Is darshan open at night?
Yes. According to the Shrine Board, darshan is open round the clock throughout the year. It pauses for about two hours during the morning and evening aarti.
What should I wear for the Yatra?
Comfortable flat-soled shoes with good grip, and layers. Even in summer the Bhawan is cool at night, and in winter heavy woollens are needed. Carry rain protection in the monsoon. See What to carry.
Can I carry my mobile phone?
Phones, cameras, belts, combs, shoes and other items not allowed in the Holy Cave must be deposited at the free cloak rooms at the Bhawan before darshan. Rules on electronic items along the track can change, so follow the instructions of security staff.
Is food available on the way?
Yes. The Shrine Board runs Bhojanalayas at Adhkuwari, Sanjichhat and the Bhawan (round the clock at the Bhawan) and refreshment units along both tracks. Food on the route is vegetarian.
Do I need to visit Bhairon Temple?
It is optional, but many devotees believe the Yatra is complete only after visiting Bhairon Temple, about 1.5 km above the Bhawan. A passenger ropeway connects the Bhawan and Bhairon Ghati.
Can I stay overnight at the Bhawan?
Yes. The Shrine Board offers rented rooms and dormitories (book on the official portal) and free rest halls on a first-come, first-served basis, with free blankets against a refundable deposit.
