Vaishno Devi Yatra Registration & RFID Card

Every pilgrim needs a free RFID Yatra Access Card from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. Here is where to get it, the six-hour rule at Banganga, and how online registration works.

Registration for the Yatra is mandatory for every pilgrim and is done only by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board — the only statutory authority allowed to issue Yatra registration. It is free of cost. Each pilgrim is photographed and issued an individual RFID Yatra Access Card, which is checked along the route.

Where to register

Counter Location
Yatra Registration Counter (YRC) Near the main bus stand, Katra
YRC-II Near the second bus stand on Udhampur Road, about 1 km from the main counter. Convenient for pilgrims arriving by tour coach.
Online Through the Shrine Board's official online services portal, followed by card collection as instructed by the Shrine Board

The Shrine Board has also run registration facilities at other points, such as Katra railway station, during busy periods. Ask at the official counters or check the website for the current list.

The six-hour rule

You must cross the first check post at Banganga — about 1.5 km from the registration counter — within six hours of your RFID card being issued. If you don't, the card is confiscated at the check post and you will need to register again.

So register only when you are ready to start: after you have checked in to your hotel, deposited extra luggage and had a meal.

What you need

  • Every pilgrim needs a separate card, including children.
  • Carry a valid photo identity document for each adult. Requirements can change, so check the official website.
  • You will be photographed at the counter.

Waiting days

The Shrine Board allows only about 30,000–35,000 pilgrims a day to have darshan. When arrivals exceed this, registration is suspended and pilgrims wait in Katra ("waiting"). Check the Yatra status on the official website before you travel, especially for weekends in May–June, the second half of December, long weekends and the Navratras.

Why registration matters

  • It lets the Shrine Board regulate crowds on a mountain where even basic supplies must be carried up by ponies or porters.
  • It helps in emergencies, because the Board knows who is on the mountain.
  • According to the Shrine Board, registered pilgrims are covered by a free accidental insurance scheme for the Yatra. Check the official website for current terms.

After registering

  1. Head to Banganga (on foot, by auto-rickshaw or taxi) and cross the check post within six hours.
  2. Keep your card safe and show it when asked — it is scanned at points along the route.
  3. Continue via the old track, the alternate track or Tarakote Marg. See the Yatra route.
