The Vaishno Devi Bhawan buildings lit up in the evening against snowy mountains

The Holy Cave

The sanctum of Mata Vaishno Devi is a natural cave at the Bhawan, about 5,200 ft up the Trikuta mountain, where pilgrims have darshan of the three Holy Pindis.

The Holy Cave is the sanctum sanctorum of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi and the destination of the Yatra. It lies within the Bhawan complex at about 5,200 ft, roughly 12–13 km on foot from Katra.

Inside the cave

Inside, the Goddess is worshipped in the form of the Holy Pindis — three natural rock heads rising from a single rock — revered as Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi and Maha Saraswati. The Shrine Board notes that the rock body is immersed in water and that a marble platform has been built around it. There are no idols. See Pindi Darshan.

Pilgrims pass through the cave in a continuously moving queue, round the clock, because the narrow cave cannot accommodate group visits. This is one reason the number of pilgrims allowed up the mountain each day is regulated.

The original cave and the tunnels

To increase capacity, the Shrine Board built an artificial tunnel alongside the existing passage, creating a one-way circuit. The original Holy Cave is narrow; the Shrine Board states that it is also opened for darshan during the winter months, when crowds are lower, and describes darshan through it as a unique experience.

Older accounts describe pilgrims wading through water inside the cave, a stream revered as Charan Ganga.

Aarti

The aarti of the Goddess is performed twice a day — in the morning just before sunrise and in the evening just after sunset. According to the Shrine Board, the full procedure inside the sanctum and then outside the cave takes nearly two hours, during which darshan remains suspended. See Yatra timings.

At the Bhawan

The Bhawan complex has free and rented accommodation, Bhojanalayas, cloak rooms, blanket stores, medical facilities including an ICU, banks and a police post. Belts, combs, shoes and other items not permitted inside the cave can be left at the free cloak room opposite the main queue complex.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the Vaishno Devi trek take?

It varies with fitness, crowds and the route. Many walking pilgrims allow most of a day for the round trip, plus time in the darshan queue, which can be long at peak times. Plan for a full day and night.

Is darshan open at night?

Yes. According to the Shrine Board, darshan is open round the clock throughout the year. It pauses for about two hours during the morning and evening aarti.

What should I wear for the Yatra?

Comfortable flat-soled shoes with good grip, and layers. Even in summer the Bhawan is cool at night, and in winter heavy woollens are needed. Carry rain protection in the monsoon. See What to carry.

Can I carry my mobile phone?

Phones, cameras, belts, combs, shoes and other items not allowed in the Holy Cave must be deposited at the free cloak rooms at the Bhawan before darshan. Rules on electronic items along the track can change, so follow the instructions of security staff.

Is food available on the way?

Yes. The Shrine Board runs Bhojanalayas at Adhkuwari, Sanjichhat and the Bhawan (round the clock at the Bhawan) and refreshment units along both tracks. Food on the route is vegetarian.

Do I need to visit Bhairon Temple?

It is optional, but many devotees believe the Yatra is complete only after visiting Bhairon Temple, about 1.5 km above the Bhawan. A passenger ropeway connects the Bhawan and Bhairon Ghati.

Can I stay overnight at the Bhawan?

Yes. The Shrine Board offers rented rooms and dormitories (book on the official portal) and free rest halls on a first-come, first-served basis, with free blankets against a refundable deposit.
