Ponies, Palkis & Pithus

How to hire ponies, palanquins (palkis) and porters (pithus) safely on the Vaishno Devi track — registration cards, fixed rates and tips from the Shrine Board.

Walking 12–13 km up a mountain is hard for many people. Ponies, palkis (palanquins carried by bearers) and pithus (porters who carry luggage or small children) help pilgrims who are elderly, unwell, overweight or travelling with young children.

Who runs these services?

The services are managed under the local municipal committee. Every pony owner, palki bearer and pithu must be registered and carry an identity card or token number, renewed every year with a fresh validity date.

Rates

According to the Shrine Board, rates for these services are fixed. They are displayed on sign boards and at assistance centres in Katra, at Banganga and elsewhere. Rates are revised from time to time, so check the current boards or assistance counters rather than relying on figures online.

  • Don't pay more than the fixed rate. Offering food or refreshments to your operator is a kind gesture, but it is your choice.
  • For any difficulty, contact the municipal committee counters or the Shrine Board offices.

Tips

  • Hire at the start of the journey. Ponies, palkis and pithus are much easier to find at the beginning than midway.
  • Think about the descent. The Shrine Board notes that riding a pony downhill can be more tiring for the body than walking up. Many pilgrims who walk up hire a pony for the way down; decide what suits you.
  • Ponies use the old track only. The alternate track via Himkoti is pony-free.
  • Pithus can carry small children who are too young or afraid to ride, or light elderly pilgrims.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the easiest route from Katra to the Bhawan?

For walkers, Tarakote Marg (Banganga area to Adhkuwari) followed by the alternate track via Himkoti is the gentlest. Both are free of ponies, and battery cars run on the alternate track. See Katra to Bhawan.

Are ponies allowed on all tracks?

No. Ponies use the traditional (old) track. The alternate track via Himkoti does not allow ponies.

How do I hire a pony or palki safely?

Hire only registered operators. Check that their ID card is valid for the current year, pay no more than the fixed rates displayed on sign boards and at assistance centres, and keep their card until you reach your destination. See Ponies, palkis & pithus.

How far is Bhairon Temple from the Bhawan?

About 1.5 km, and roughly 1,400 ft higher, at 6,619 ft. You can walk or take the Bhawan–Bhairon ropeway.
