Families with young children make the Yatra every day. A little preparation keeps it happy and safe.
Registration
Every pilgrim needs their own RFID Yatra Access Card — children included. Register the whole family together at the counter. See Yatra registration.
Carrying young children
- Pithus (registered porters) can carry small children who are too young or too nervous to ride, as well as luggage.
- Ponies suit older children who are comfortable riding, accompanied by the pony handler.
- Hire only registered pithus and pony owners, check that their ID card is valid for the current year, and keep the card until you reach your destination. See Ponies, palkis & pithus.
Choosing the route
The alternate track via Himkoti has no ponies, a gentler gradient and plenty of shelters, which makes it pleasant for families on foot. Tarakote Marg (Banganga area to Adhkuwari) is also a walking route. See Katra to Bhawan.
Packing for children
- Warm layers and a cap. The Bhawan is cold at night even in summer.
- A raincoat or poncho in the monsoon.
- Comfortable shoes with good grip, and a spare pair of socks.
- Water, light snacks and any medicines.
- A card in each child's pocket with a parent's name and mobile number.
Safety in crowds
- Agree on a meeting point (for example, a numbered shelter or a Bhojanalaya) in case you get separated.
- If a child is lost, inform the nearest Shrine Board official or police post immediately. Announcements are made on the public address system.
- Avoid peak days if you can. Long waits in queues are hardest on small children.

Where is medical help available on the route?
There are medical facilities at Banganga, Adhkuwari, Sanjichhat (hospital) and the Bhawan (dispensary with ICU), plus a block hospital and 24-hour charitable dispensary in Katra.
