The hills are at their greenest in the monsoon, but heavy rain brings real risks. How to plan a monsoon Yatra safely, based on the Shrine Board's…

Pilgrim Tips
From registering too early to booking helicopters on fake websites — common pitfalls on the Vaishno Devi Yatra and simple ways to avoid them.
Your RFID card must cross the Banganga check post within six hours of being issued, or it is confiscated. Register only when you are ready to start.
Registration is free and only the Shrine Board can issue it. Anyone charging for a "Yatra parchi" is not authorised.
Fraudulent helicopter booking sites and social media pages are common. Book only on the official Shrine Board portal. No agent can guarantee you a seat.
Fashion footwear on a 12–13 km mountain track is a recipe for blisters. Wear flat, comfortable shoes with good grip, as the Shrine Board advises.
Heavy bags slow you down, and the Shrine Board specifically asks pilgrims to travel light. Leave luggage at your hotel or a free Shrine Board cloak room.
Even when Katra is sweltering, the Bhawan is cool at night. In winter it drops below freezing. Free blankets are available against a refundable deposit, but bring a jacket.
Check that the operator's ID card is valid for the current year, pay only the displayed fixed rates, and keep the card until you arrive. Hire at the start of the track; it's harder midway.
Heavy rain can trigger landslides. The Shrine Board's guidelines say don't start the Yatra in adverse weather and postpone if alerts are issued. Check the weather and official advisories.
At peak times darshan can take many hours, and registration may stop for the day. Avoid peak dates if you can, and keep a spare day in your plans.
Rules, timings and status change. Rely only on the Shrine Board's official website, helplines and verified accounts, not on forwarded messages.
Timings, fares, rules and routes can change at short notice. Please confirm time-sensitive details with Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board or the relevant authority before you travel.
