Vaishno Devi in the Monsoon: Safety Guide

The hills are at their greenest in the monsoon, but heavy rain brings real risks. How to plan a monsoon Yatra safely, based on the Shrine Board's guidelines.

The Shrine Board describes the monsoon as a season when nature is at its scenic best, with waterfalls and lush green hills, and crowds are often smaller than in the summer holidays. But the mountain demands respect in heavy rain.

Before you travel

  • Watch the forecast for Katra and the Bhawan, and the IMD Vaishno Devi Yatra page. See Weather.
  • Follow the Shrine Board's announcements on its website and verified social media.
  • Keep your plans flexible. The Shrine Board's guidelines tell pilgrims to reschedule or postpone if heavy rain, cloudburst or landslide alerts are issued.

On the mountain

  • Do not start the Yatra in adverse weather.
  • Stay on designated tracks. Never take shortcuts.
  • Don't stop or shelter near drains, landslide-prone areas or disturbed slopes. Rest only in designated shelters.
  • Follow public address announcements and the instructions of staff, police and rescue teams, including halts and diversions.
  • Don't trek alone, especially at night or in poor visibility.

What to carry

  • Raincoat or poncho, and a cover for your bag
  • Shoes with good grip and spare socks
  • A light woollen layer, since it is cool at the Bhawan
  • A small torch

Helicopter and services

Helicopter flights, battery cars and the ropeway can be suspended in bad weather. Don't build your plan around them in the monsoon without a fallback.
