Vaishno Devi in Winter: What to Expect

Crisp air, clear views, possible snow and thinner crowds outside the holidays — plus how to stay warm and safe on a winter Yatra.

Winter, especially December and January outside the New Year rush, can be a rewarding time for the Yatra. The Shrine Board notes that the hills may see snowfall, and that the original Holy Cave is also opened in winter.

How cold does it get?

Location Winter minimum Winter maximum
Katra 3 °C 15 °C
Adhkuwari 1 °C 14.5 °C
Bhawan −2 °C 13 °C
Bhairon Ghati −3 °C 11 °C

Average figures published by the Shrine Board.

Packing for winter

  • Heavy woollens — a thermal layer, a sweater and a jacket
  • Cap, gloves and warm socks
  • Shoes with good grip for wet or icy patches
  • Free blankets are available at the Bhawan against a refundable deposit

Who should take care

The Shrine Board notes that winter can be charming for most pilgrims, but not for the very young or the physically infirm. Anyone with heart or breathing conditions should consult a doctor first.

Crowds

Crowds are generally lower in winter, except around New Year, which is one of the busiest times of the year.
